Monthly Running Challenge with Nike Plus

I started a monthly running Challenge last May 2015.  I started these challenges to get myself and others get out and run.  As an avid Obstacle Course Racer, running is a very important part of my training.  I found myself not getting enough running miles every week, so I decided to start a running challenge.  Luckily, I found that the Nike Plus app allows you to create challenges, making it easy to keep track of all challengers mileage.

Nike Plus Running Challenge

It's pretty simple to set up.  First you'll need to download the app and create an account.  It will be helpful to add friends in the app as well.  They will be potential challengers.  In the menu, select "Challenges" and then "Start A New Challenge".  You will then create a name for your challenge, the distance you would like to achieve during the challenge, the duration of the challenge, and the challengers.  Once you've done that, hit "Send Invite".  Make sure all your challengers are added at that time.  The app does not allow you to add additional challengers once it has been created.  Your only option will be to recreate the challenge.

As I said earlier, the app keeps track of every challengers mileage.  It will show you where you stand against other challengers including details on the total distance each person has run so far during the challenge.  It will also tell you who has run the preselected mileage for the challenge, taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  Although, it's great to see who has completed first, second, and third, I like to make sure everyone knows it is not about who gets there first.  My challenges are about helping people complete the challenge, and just doing more than they would normally do.

If you would like to join my next challenge, friend me on Nike Plus.  Just look up Fermin Banawa.  Contact me and friend me on Facebook.  I welcome anyone who is wanting to get out there an run more.  For those of you who are serious runners, see how you stack up against other serious runners.

A Couple Ways I Train For Spartan Races

Trail Running and Sandbag exercises are a couple of ways I train for OCR( Obstacle Races).  Spartan Race always seem to find awesome trails to run through during their events.  Honestly, I like trail running better than running on the road.  It's just a little more exciting in my opinion.  On the trails it's important to stay alert of path so that you do not trip over rocks, roots, and other things you might find on the trail. Most of the trails I've run have been very windy as appose to a straight street or sidewalk.  All this is great training for obstacle races.

The Sandbag exercises I do also help get ready for obstacle races.  Usually they have you carry something.  I've had to carry logs, sandbags, buckets of sand, buckets of sand, and even ruck sacks.  Adding a little weight during your runs or even walks can help you prepare for some of these challenges during the races.  There are many other ways to train with sandbags besides just walking or running with them.  You can do squats, lunges, presses, curls, etc.

While these are a couple of ways of training for obstacle races, they are not the only things I do to prepare.  Below are a couple other workouts I've done to get ready for Spartan Races.
